Bridge & Britten: Recital 3
Friday 25 May 2018 at 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm£12.50
Pre-performance talk: 4-4.30pm
In the final recital of this series we hear Bridge’s magnificent piano quintet composed in 1904-05, then heavily revised some years later. This wonderfully romantic piece is paired with Britten’s first mature string quartet, a striking work of contrasting moods, which he composed while living in America in 1941. It is dedicated to Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, a great friend and patron of Bridge’s, and premiered 8 months after Bridge’s tragically early death in January 1941.
This season we pay tribute to Frank Bridge, Britten’s first and arguably most important composition teacher. Each recital will include a pre-performance talk looking at Bridge’s musical style and his influence on the young Britten. Bridge symbolically handed over his viola to Britten as the younger composer left for America in 1939: this very instrument, previously displayed in our permanent exhibition, will be played by the up-and-coming violist Josh Hayward in all three recitals.
Series offer: book all three recitals for £35 here.
