Festive Music: Variations on a French Carol

Britten composed this piece in 1931 for soprano, alto, violin, viola and piano, and it is based on the Carol of the Deanery of Sainte-Ménehoulde. (An earlier advent calendar entry included a mention of this piece in Britten’s diary on 5 December 1931, where he notes he has copied out the soprano part.) He prepared fair copies of all the vocal and instrumental parts for a musical evening on 9 January 1932 – writing in his diary afterward ‘Sing alot of Part Songs including My variations – quite good!’
