Aldeburgh Cinema is a Registered Charity, a world-class cinema since 1919 and home of The Aldeburgh Documentary Festival.

Aldeburgh Cinema has been continuously showing films for almost 100 years, a feat made possible through the ingenuity of local heroes, starting with gentleman’s outfitter, Walter Hill, who originally built the auditorium alongside his shop. The Cinema was rescued from closure in the 1960s by the determination of remarkable individuals, including Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, who devoted time and money to ensuring the little town of Aldeburgh still has its own cinema to this day.

Aldeburgh Cinema: On The Waterfront

In association with Aldeburgh Cinema we present films associated with Leonard Bernstein. Marlon Brando stars in this delicious classic, based upon a series of Pulitzer Prize-winning articles by Malcolm Johnson. This brutal, violently realistic drama, set against the sordid background of the New York waterfront, remains as relevant today as it was in 1954. From the pages of The Hollywood Reporter, 28 Jul 1954: Leonard Bernstein's mastery of modern musical technique delivers a truly outstanding score and James Shield's sound…
