A nationwide festival which will re-examine the notion of ‘Civilisation’ as originally suggested by Kenneth Clark in his BBC TV series. As part of the festival, we have a Reading Room exhibition exploring this project and tracing the working relationship between Britten and Kenneth Clark himself. We also look at how our collections explore the link between ‘high’ culture and rootedness in a particular locale via East Anglian paintings and Britten’s ‘Suffolk opera’ Peter Grimes.

This exhibition was in partnership with BBC Civilisations.
